James Powell, MD
Clinical Educator Fellow
You will easily recognize Jamie as the tallest member of the CHES community. Born and raised in the Okanagan Valley, Jamie kept the residents safe as a firefighter until leaving to pursue a medical degree from the Southern Medical Program in Kelowna. Currently, Jamie is finishing his residency training through Kelowna General Hospital, to become a specialist in Emergency Medicine. When not working in the emergency room Jamie enjoys terrifying his rivals on the volleyball court, and hosting games nights with what may be Kelowna’s best collection of board games.
Research Interests
Jamie is currently pursuing an International Master of Health Professions Education from the School of Health Professions Education at Maastricht University (the Netherlands), while working with faculty and mentors from CHES. He has taken an interest in methods of effective and efficient teaching in the setting of a busy Emergency Department. He is also interested in identity formation and how residents develop an identity as a clinical teacher.
Current Academic Activities
Jamie is currently finishing his residency training through Kelowna General Hospital to become a specialist in Emergency Medicine. He teaches medical students and residents clinically in the Emergency Department (ED), and non-clinically at UBCs medical training sites in Kelowna and Vancouver. He is an active BLS, ACLS and ATLS instructor, and he has been involved in the implementation of the competency-based medical education curriculum at UBC.
Recently Jamie has taken on the role as a clinical skills subgroup member with UBC’s Ultrasound Working Group. He works with a team across BC to develop evidence-based clinical skills videos and tutor guides for UBC’s undergraduate ultrasound curriculum.
